Congleton, Cheshire, England, CW12 3RH

Bear baiting was a popular pastime in Elizabethan Congleton, where the senior public offices were Mayor, Aletaster, and Bear Warden. A traditional song suggests the town even sold a rare bible in order to pay for a more aggressive combatant. The town’s brewery today was founded in 1994 and supports charities such as Asian bear rescue centers.
