New Belgium Brewing’s fans praise its beers and the sense of environmental and social responsibility its employees represent. Those beers are particularly coveted east of the Mississippi, where they are nearly impossible to find. Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan started out with a system, built to Belgian specifications, in their cellar in 1991. They now operate the third largest craft brewery in the US. Best known for Fat Tire Ale, the brewery offers quite a wide range of beers, including its outstanding Blue Paddle Pilsener.

Brewing secret

New Belgium has more capacity for ageing beer on wood than any brewery other than Rodenbach Brewery in Belgium.

Fat Tire

beer style: Amber Ale
alcohol content: 5.3% ABV

Biscuity, malty nose, with toasted caramel in the middle and a balanced finish on the sweet side of dry.

Mothership Wit

beer style: Witbier
alcohol content: 4.8% ABV

The brewery’s first organic beer. Fruity and spicy; a creamy texture and wheat tartness on the tongue. Refreshing acidity at the finish.

La Folie

beer style: Flemish Sour
alcohol content: 6% ABV

Tart fruits on the nose, then oak and vanilla. Distinct but balanced acidity; a mouth-puckering finish.

Abbey

beer style: Double
alcohol content: 7% ABV

Fruity-spicy aromas of bananas and raisins, with complex chocolate and dark fruit flavors. Rich on the tongue before easing to a dry finish.
