Technically became first 'satyagrahi' against Emergency: When Jaitley recalled his time in jail

"I technically became the first 'satyagrahi' against the Emergency because on 26 June, this was the only protest in the country. For three months, I was at Ambala jail," said Jaitley, as quoted in the book "Defining India: Through Their Eyes" by journalist-author Sonia Singh. Former Union finance minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley died at AIIMS on August 24. He was 66. Union home minister Amit Shah said, "Arun Jaitley's demise is an unbearable loss to the workers of BJP. As a student leader, he was jailed for 19 months during the emergency. As a Member of Parliament, he always raised the voice of the people and acted as a crusader against corruption."
