However, since small businesses make up 99.7% of all American companies, that means that more than half of the private workforce is employed by 0.3% of the companies, suggesting that a select handful of corporations are primarily responsible for allowing the U.S. economy to remain in homeostasis. Many big companies not only employ American citizens here at home, but help stimulate the job markets across all four corners of the Earth. Using data from Statista, Stacker listed the 50 companies that employ the most people globally as of 2016. The list includes employers that are both private and public organizations, ranging from for-profit retail companies to citizen-serving government agencies.
