Hardly two weeks after she landed in the UAE with her children to spend time with her husband, an Indian woman met with an accident in Ras Al Khaimah that has left her in coma.

Archana Shashidharan, 35, came to the UAE on a one-month visit to her husband Shashidharan - a carpenter working in the UAE for 12 years - on March 25, from their hometown of Kanhangad in Kerala. The family was crossing a road while returning to their room after shopping, when she was hit by a vehicle on April 6.

"Within ten minutes, an ambulance came and rushed her to the government hospital. Later, she was shifted to a private hospital where she is undergoing treatment now. She is still unconscious and on a ventilator," said Shashidharan. He added the doctors are not sure when she will regain consciousness.

"We were going home at 8pm after shopping on the day of the incident. We were all in a happy mood. She was walking in the front when we were crossing the road. As it is a busy road, many vehicles stopped to give way for us. But she didn't notice a vehicle on the slow lane, which hit her, causing severe head injuries," he recalled.

Archana took one-month's leave from her finance company job back home to celebrate Vishu, the Malayalee festival on April 14 and their son's birthday on April 16 with her husband. "It was her first visit to the UAE. My two children, who are also on visit visa, are shocked by this tragedy," Shashidharan told Khaleej Times.

The family was planning to return to Kerala on April 23 but now, the plan is in limbo as Archana is still on a ventilator.

A case has been registered with the Ras Al Khaimah Police and relevant hospital documents are submitted to the police, according to Shashidharan.

The RAK Police told Khaleej Times they could not comment on the case, but said it has been referred to the public prosecution and an investigation is under way.
