A monster mum who drowned her two sons aged three and six in the bathtub has been jailed for life.

Laurel Schlemmer carried out the horrific killings after becoming obsessed with the idea that she could not care for her sons Luke and Daniel.

She believed they had autism, despite tests proving otherwise, and that she could only look after her third and eldest son Joshua if the younger boys were 'in heaven'.

A court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, heard that in 2013 she tied the boys by their hands and feet and ran them over in her minivan three times.

But the boys survived after hospital treatment and somehow remained in her care.

Tragically, she successfully carried out her intentions to kill the boys in April 2014.

She told one doctor she was experiencing "intense and preoccupying anxiety about the anticipated problems that her youngest two sons would face in the future and concluded that they would be better off 'in heaven'."

After filling the bathtub and helping the boys out of their superhero pyjamas, Schlemmer told police in interview: "They got in the bathtub and, um, these crazy voices were prompting me to act irrationally."

"I, uh, changed clothes and, um, and I got in there with them and held them under water.

"And I felt like I was looking down on the whole thing, just kind of out of body, and then I freaked out and then got out (and) changed my clothes and got them out."

She dialled 911 and told a dispatcher the boys were playing in the tub before she found them unconscious.

Paramedics arrived and began treating the boys but Luke died soon after.

Daniel held on for four days before succumbing to his injuries.

Schlemmer was sentenced today to 30 to 80 years in jail on two counts of murder, but a judge described it as a "defacto life sentence."
