David Dinkins (July 10, 1927 – Nov. 23, 2020)

The first African American mayor of New York City, New York, U.S., died of natural causes at his home in the city. He was 93. Dinkins became the 106th mayor of the city when he defeated Republican Rudy Giuliani in the 1989 elections. He had earlier beaten three-term incumbent Ed Koch in the Democratic primary to secure his nomination. His tenure lasted one term, ending in 1993, and was marred by escalating violence in the city.
