The first match on Monday between Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders saw a moment of brilliance on the field from Sanju Samson. With 15 needed off 11 balls for KKR, Samson showcased his athletic ability to the fullest, stopping a certain six from crossing the ropes.

Delhi pacer Chris Morris pitched it up to a well-set Manish Pandey, who launched into a heave over the leg side. As the ball was in the sky, most in the Feroz Shah Kotla crowd had assumed the ball would easily cross the boundary ropes, but in came Sanju Samson from long-on, caught the ball mid-air and in a swift motion threw the ball back onto the field, saving a certain six.

He deserved the standing ovation from his teammates in the players box and the fans in the stadium.

His effort though went in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders rode on a brilliant batting effort from Pandey to beat Delhi Daredevils by four wickets. In Delhi's innings, Samson continued his purple patch with the bat as well, scorring a quickfire 37 runs off 25 balls, slamming seven boundaries, including three off pacer Umesh Yadav.

Rising Pune Supergiant's Ben Stokes had made a similar attempt against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, when he saved a Stuart Binny shot from going over the ropes.

He caught the ball inside the ropes and on realising that he was failing over and would be giving away six runs, threw back the ball into the field for his teammate Dan Christain to clean up.
