Uruguay defeated Portugal 2-1 on the first day of the World Cup’s round of 16 to set up a quarter-final clash with France, who earlier had beaten Argentina 4-3 in a dramatic game in Kazan.

The South Americans scored two superb goals by Edinson Cavani and then put on a masterclass of defending to end any hopes Cristiano Ronaldo and co had of adding the World Cup to the Euro 2016 crown they won in France.

With one of the tournament’s best defences and a formidable forward line of Luis Suarez and Cavani, Uruguay are now being talked up as one of the favourites.
