Guy Sebastian rejects reports that audiences of 'The Voice' are 'held against their will'

In a conversation with Kyle Sandilands and Jackie 'O' Henderson from KIIS 1065's Kyle & Jackie O Show this morning, the 37-year-old musician -- who this year joined Boy George, Kelly Rowland and Delta Goodrem as a coach on the hit show -- rubbished claims people weren't allowed to leave tapings, firmly stating, "No one was locked in."

"Apparently on the set of The Voice here in Australia the cops were called because an audience member rang up the cops to say he was being held against his will when taping went three hours over," Henderson said during her 'O News' segment. "You know how long it goes -- those shows, they tape for so long, and the audience gets very bored, and I'm assuming some guy wanted to leave, and they were like, 'No, you can't leave until we stop filming,' so he called the cops."

"I thought we'd go straight to the source with Guy Sebastian to find out if this really happened," she said.

"Are you holding people against their will on the set of The Voice?" asked Sandilands, getting straight to the point.

"Oh, that's how we roll -- they're not gonna be there by choice, are they?" Sebastian responded jokingly.

"There was a spokesperson for the NSW Police who said that there was no police called," he continued. "I think they've got bigger fish to fry than 'being held hostage' at Fox Studios at a Voice filming." However, he admitted "it did run over".

Sandilands, who has also been a talent show judge -- first on Australian Idol, then on Australia's Got Talent and The X Factor -- agreed that it can be hard for shows of this nature to stay on schedule.

"And Kyle, we've both done TV, and sometimes the shoots go quickly and they end on time, and other days you feel a bit sorry for the audience because they've gotta sit through stuff, and we're filming overlays of us hitting the button," Sebastian further explained. "But there's a comedian there! Maybe he just wasn't that funny that night."

Sandilands offered a bit more from his own experience. "If someone does want to leave -- which is obviously what's happened -- and someone says, 'We don't want to release the audience yet,' that's their job, to keep everyone on their seats," he said. "So if they cut back to you hitting the button, and all of a sudden the person has miraculously changed from a 19-year-old girl to a 70-year-old man behind you, people start claiming what's happening on this show? That's why they keep them there!"

"Exactly," Sebastian concurred. "And it's also so they're not walking in shot. It's like when you go to a concert or whatever, or a theatre show, and they say, 'Just move during the interval,' or if you're at the tennis and they're like, 'Just wait until this segment is done, then you can go.'"

There was one more rumour Sebastian wanted to get out of the way: that the coaches are told which artists to turn their big red chairs for.

"Look, I've done shows before, and the thing that I love about this so far is they give us full rein as far as coaches go," Sebastian explained. "I've probably never been less produced on a show, which I'm actually really enjoying. They're letting us have free rein."

The Voice Australia will return later this year on Nine.
