St George Illawarra are expected to announce the signing of former New Zealand captain Benji Marshall after the Cronulla Sharks announced they had pulled out of the race for his signature.

The Sharks chief executive Steve Noyce said the former Wests Tigers star had committed elsewhere.

"We made Benji a very good offer and are disappointed he won't be joining our club," Sharks chief executive Steve Noyce said.

With St George Illawarra the only other club in negotiations with Marshall an announcement is expected confirming he will join the Dragons for the next two and a half years.

Marshall made himself available to NRL clubs after an unsuccessful stint in Super Rugby in Auckland.

He was released by the Blues last month by mutual agreement after failing to secure a spot in the Blues' starting side.

St George Illawarra, Cronulla and Melbourne had all expressed interest in securing the service of the experienced Marshall who played 12 seasons with the Wests Tigers before his brief stint in Super Rugby.
