Turnbull Government's energy reform takes next step 10/08/2018 Lane Calcutt

The Turnbull Government’s energy policy has taken another step forward after state ministers agreed to take it to the next stage.

In what will be seen as something of a win for Energy Minister, Josh Frydenberg, the crucial meeting agreed to the release of the exposure draft of the legislation, and for a phone hook-up after next Tuesday’s meeting of Coalition MPs.

Energy Security Board chair, Kerry Schott, described the outcome as a “great step forward”.

It means the National Energy Guarantee is still alive, leaving the door open to being accepted.

There were fears Labor ministers could have killed if off, and refused to progress, after putting forward demands for changes.

It makes the party meeting critical, as some conservatives threaten to oppose the plan, saying it’s too green, and focuses more on reducing emissions than power prices.
