Nokian Tyres, the Finnish tire maker famous for its excellent cold-weather offerings, has just launched a new all-season tire specifically for the North American market. Designed to absorb impacts from potholes, it uses a high-strength fiber material also found in bulletproof vests, and can last up to 80,000 miles.

The tire, called the Nokian Tyres One, uses Aramid fiber—the same material found in spacecraft landing cushions—to bolster its sidewalls, protecting against blowouts in high-impact scenarios, such as speed bumps or potholes. Nokian has previously used this tech in its light truck and SUV offerings, but this is the first time it's using it in a passenger vehicle tire.

“We’ve crafted the Nokian Tyres One to give drivers peace of mind in the moments they need it most, especially when they encounter an unexpected pothole or rough road,” Nokian Tyres North America Director of Products Steve Bourassa said in a statement. “Drivers can take comfort that the Nokian Tyres One features Aramid Sidewalls that give drivers Pothole Protection and peace of mind on North America’s jaw-rattling roads.”

Thanks to the rugged construction, as well as a proprietary compound and tread pattern, Nokian is able to warranty the new tire to 80,000 miles. The company's standard pothole protection policy will replace any tire that's damaged beyond repair thanks to a road hazard, free of charge.
