An Australian has plunged to their death after falling from a high wall above a popular surf beach in Portugal, reportedly while trying to take a selfie.

A man, believed to be in his 40s, and a woman, thought to be in her 30s, were discovered on the sand at the foot of a 30-metre rock wall by a beach cleaner, according to local media.

It is believed the pair fell to their deaths between 1am and 6am on Tuesday morning (local time).

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokesperson has yet to confirm which of the dead persons was an Australian citizen.

DFAT is "providing consular assistance ... to the family of an Australian who died in Portugal," the spokesperson told Nine.com.au.

"The Department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident," the spokesperson added.

Ericeria is a fishing and surfing town on Portugal's western Atlantic Ocean coast, 50km north-west of capital Lisbon.

Emergency workers found a mobile phone on the wall, leading Portuguese police to believe the pair were taking a selfie and lost balance.

Ericeria is famous for its surf and the imposing large stone wall, its face lined with shrubs, which frames the town's surf beach.

EDIT: At 9:24am this article was edited to accurately reflect the death of one Australian, not two as Portuguese media was initially reporting.
