An emergency warning has been issued for an out of control bushfire burning near Masonite Road, Tomago, just north of Newcastle. The fire is approximately 29 hectares in size and heading in an easterly direction towards Newcastle Airport.

The airport has been closed and all flights cancelled for this afternoon and this evening.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) have warned residents in Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd, Masonite Rd and areas close to the southern end of Newcastle Airport that it is too late to leave and to shelter in place.

"Check and follow your bushfire survival plan and prepare for a bushfire in your area," RFS advice said.

The RFS said the firefighters on the scene were assisted by waterbombing aircraft including the large Nancy Bird.

Greg Allan from the RFS said there were no reports of loss of property and a wind change was expected this evening.

"We're likely to see a southerly wind change this afternoon so we're advising residents to monitor the conditions in the area and take advice from firefighters," he said earlier.

The wind changed from moving in an easterly direction towards the coast to moving north after 4:00pm.
