A Gold Coast retiree has taken out the $60 million Powerball jackpot overnight, the second-largest division one prize ever won by a single entry in Australian lottery.

The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he bought the entry in a spur-of-the-moment decision, having played Powerball on and off and previously never winning more than $600.

Thursday night's jackpot has only been topped by a $70 million Powerball prize won by Hervey Bay grandparents in 2016. The $60 million Powerball jackpot has not been won since 2013.

The winner, who lives in Burleigh Heads, said he would share his winnings with his family.

"Is this a joke? You’ve got to be kidding me, surely," he told the official who had phoned to give him the news.

"That’s unbelievable. I’m a bit stunned. I don’t know what to say. I’m staggered. I can’t get my head around it.

"It’s a dream. You enter it and you don’t expect to win it. I’d better hang on tight to my ticket.

"Most likely I will share it with my family and go on a real (sic) good holiday."

Although retired, the man said he was "young enough" to have plenty of time to enjoy his windfall.

"I’m over the moon. It’s just life-changing. I’m shaking. I don’t expect to get much sleep tonight."

The ticket was bought at Nextra Burleigh Town News, which also sold another winning entry worth $1.3 million in March this year.

Two division two winners also took home more than $350,000 each in Powerball draw 1173 after the winning numbers of 29, 35, 12, 30, 17, 23, 15 and a Powerball number of 10 were drawn.

This year, there have been 15 winning division one Powerball entries across the country who have shared in $364 million of prize money.
