A passenger flight from Coolangatta to Sydney has made an emergency landing in Brisbane after experiencing engine troubles.

The pilot spotted the engine problems shortly after taking off from the Gold Coast on Thursday evening and diverted the plane.

The Virgin Australia flight VA546 touched down in Brisbane about 10pm on Thursday, with firefighters quickly on scene.

"The captain decided to divert to Brisbane as a precautionary measure after an indication light illuminated after take-off," a Virgin Australia spokesperson told AAP.

"As part of normal safety processes, the captain reported the matter and the aircraft was met on arrival by emergency services as a precautionary measure only."

There were no reported injuries of passengers or staff. All guests were provided overnight accommodation and will arrive in Sydney on Friday morning.
