Teen in critical condition after 'freak' speedboat crash logo 11/02/2019

A teenage girl is in a critical condition after she became trapped underwater following a speed boat crash in Perth’s Swan River.

Phoebe Knudsen, 17, was competing in WA Speed Boat Club’s race day yesterday when she became stuck.

“It was horrible…she was trapped underneath there for some time, apparently I think her clothing got stuck, she couldn’t be released from the boat,” witness Grant Lauterbach said.

Phoebe’s family said in a statement she is an experienced racer and state champion, and was “doing what she loved doing when this tragic freak accident happened.”

“She is quite reserved and quiet, she is a very determined and strong young lady. She will be fighting hard to recover and get back to the sport she loves,” they added.

“She was doing very well and she hit some rough water and unfortunately the boat overturned,” Mr Lauterbach said.

The West Australian Speed Boat Club’s Mark Motzouris said all safety measures were in place at the time.

“We always have two rescue boats on the water at any given time,” Mr Motzouris said.

“Each rescue boat has a driver manning the boat and then we always have a safety diver.”

9News understands authorities are investigating reports that an emergency jet ski wasn’t on site yesterday.
