A teenager has been shot by police in Springfield, south-west of Brisbane, after allegedly lunging at officers with a knife.

The 16-year-old boy suffered two gunshot wounds to the stomach in a home on Danube Crescent just before 2.30pm.

Police said the teenager had been taken to Princess Alexandria Hospital in a serious but stable condition. He may require surgery.

It's understood the boy's mother called police, telling them he had threatened his father with a knife.

When officers arrived the boy allegedly turned on them, prompting them to draw their guns and fire two shots that hit him in the upper body.

The officers then gave the boy first aid for up to 45 minutes, possibly saving his life.

Police confirmed they had attended an incident at a private residence, but would not give further details.

"I heard a big domestic row going on and the next thing there was two gun shots so obviously very scary," a neighbour told 9NEWS.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating.
