P2 masks may not provide protection from smoke: NSW health

December 6, 2019. NSW Health Director of Environmental Health Dr Richard Broome speaks to reporters in Sydney, saying the smoke haze around the Sydney basin is impacting peoples' health with a 25 per cent increase in the number of people presenting to emergency departments with asthma and breathing problems. Mr Broome says that people with asthma or existing heart and lung conditions should avoid outside activity. Mr Broome says the main concern with the smoke is minuscule PM2.5 particles which are so tiny they pass through most masks. "Even if you have a P2 mask the evidence is that generally they don't provide great protection because they have to fit very well," Mr Broome says. (AAP Video/Michael Wade)
