EXCLUSIVE: World number one and Australian tennis champion Ash Barty has apologised after she was caught out breaking Melbourne’s strict mask mandate.

Sky News spotted the tennis star at a Coles supermarket in Melbourne’s inner suburbs where she was breaking the city’s mandate on mask wearing.

Ms Barty’s manager told Sky News it was “an innocent mistake” and said the 24-year old promises to better comply with COVID rules into the future.

Ash Barty only this morning called on her international colleagues to put the quarantine rules in perspective declaring the health of Victorians should be the first priority.

Many of her Australian Open counterparts have been quarantining in hotels in Melbourne, while some like fellow World number one Novak Djokovic has issued a series of demands to the Victorian government including a request for the players to quarantine in Toorak mansions.

The timing is awkward though after Ms Barty was caught flagrantly breaking the Victorian government’s strict rules put in place to stem the spread of COVID-19.
