Musk has said he is on track to send people to Mars by 2024 through his aerospace company SpaceX, which currently has 544 openings to beef the team up to meet that deadline.

And if you’ve always harboured a secret desire to work for Musk, the billionaire founder of Telsa, it’s helpful to know there’s one main trait you’ll need to be successful in your job application: an appetite for exploration.

"We're out there looking for people that want to help us achieve that goal of making humans multi-planetary," SpaceX VP of Human Resources Brian Bjelde told career site Glassdoor.

He said he also looks for three other qualities in canditates and unfortunately they’re not the usual job skills like computer literacy, Excel spreadsheet skills or a great phone manner.

Bjelde looks for passion, drive and talent.

But Bjelde is also looking for something else on your resume – and that’s something you’ve failed at, alongside your usual list of achievements, of course.

"Resumes gauge the ability to write a bulleted list of achievements, and that's not always indicative of success — the resume is not going to be sitting in the seat doing the work on Monday," Bjelde said.

He recommends including a failure you’ve experienced in your career and discussing how you overcame it.

And be prepared to have your skills tested before signing a contract with SpaceX.

"If you're hiring someone to be a world-class welder here, then we actually bring them in as part of the interview and give them a welding assignment to understand their talent with this task," he said.

"We do the same thing with our engineering groups, and with any role in which the work activity can be distilled into a practical examination."
