Executives at Kobe Bryant's sports organisation have changed its name to recognise his late daughter Gianna.

The Los Angeles Lakers player died in a helicopter crash alongside 13-year-old Gianna and seven other people last month, with their deaths sending the sports and entertainment world into mourning.

On Thursday, representatives for the Mamba Sports Foundation, which makes reference to Kobe's "Black Mamba" nickname, announced that they were changing the name to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation in memory of Gianna, who was nicknamed "Mambacita".

Kobe's wife Vanessa explained the name change on Instagram besides a photo of the organisation's new logo.

"Because there is no #24 without #2, we have updated the Mamba Sports Foundation to now be called the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation," she wrote, referring Kobe and Gianna's respective jersey numbers.

"Our mission remains the same – and stronger than ever – to provide opportunities to young people through sports. Thank you all for the outpouring of support and your kind donations to date as we carry forth Kobe and Gigi’s legacy.. We hope to empower young athletes in a world they left us all to help shape."

Their jersey numbers have been retired following their deaths.

Kobe and Gianna were buried in a private ceremony last week in Corona Del Mar, California. A public memorial will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the home of the Lakers, on 24 February. The 2/24 date also makes reference to their jersey numbers.
