© Provided by Perform Media Channels Limited The NRL have marked their respect to the Christchurch shooting victims with a touching minute's silence during Newcastle's season opener against Cronulla on Friday night.

A total of five players from both teams were of New Zealand heritage including Shaun Johnson, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Danny Levi, Sosaia Feki and Sione Katoa.

You could hear a pin drop at McDonald Jones Stadium as the opposing sides stood still.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg announced the sign of respect in the lead up to kick-off, with rivals Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs to follow suit in the later game.

The Warriors will also host one when they face Canterbury on Saturday.

Earlier, former NRL star Sonny Bill Williams choked back tears in a emotional tribute video to the victims.

"Just heard the news I couldn't put it into words how I'm feeling right now," Williams said.

"I'm just deeply, deeply saddened this would happen in New Zealand."
