Tournament upstarts Japan have held their nerve to deny Australia a Wheelchair Rugby World Championship gold medal, beating the hosts 62-61 at Sydney Olympic Park.

Having disposed of world No.2 and four-time champions the USA in Thursday's semi-final, the Japanese weren't overawed by facing defending world champs Australia in the final to claim their first international tournament title.

The Steelers were their own worst enemy at times on Friday, committing uncharacteristic turnovers as the visitors used their wheel speed and hustle to upset the hosts' rhythm.

In the earlier bronze medal match, the USA defeated Great Britain 47-36.
