A British businessman who paid £1240 ($2180) for a 12-hour British Airways flight between London and Cape Town was forced to sit on a urine-covered seat.

Andrew Wilkinson only noticed the urine after sitting down, realising his seat was damp and smelly - but when he complained to a flight attendant, his grievances were ignored.

"I told her 'I can't sit here' but she just laughed," Mr Wilkinson told the Mail on Sunday.

He said she gave him wet wipes to deal to the urine, but was ultimately unable to sufficiently clean the mess and was forced to sit on a plastic bag and a blanket to avoid the damp seat.

Mr Wilkinson took to Twitter to express his anger after the flight, which took place at the end of July.

British Airways saw the tweet, and offered him 5000 reward points and a flight voucher to the value of £435 ($765), or a free upgrade on his return flight to London.

The airline also offered a private apology to Mr Wilkinson, who earlier said that was all he wanted.
