Qantas has announced direct flights from Tokyo to Brisbane from next year in a move that is expected to boost tourism in Queensland by $37 million a year.

The airline says the new flight route will increase Japanese tourism to the Sunshine State by 20 per cent.

The announcement in Brisbane today comes after a hellish 24 hours for Qantas, with three separate flights forced to land due to technical issues yesterday.

The national carrier expects there will be four flights each week from Tokyo, catering for up to 61,000 travellers each year.

Yesterday, Qantas forecast it will report a first-half, pretax underlying profit of between $300 million and $350 million, compared to a loss last year of $252 million.

Qantas claims the free trade deal will help the reinstatement of its direct Tokyo to Brisbane flights in 2015.

Japan is Australia's second-largest trading partner.
