Once the wedding planning is over, the ceremony has gone off without a hitch and the guests have gone home, newlywed couples are treated to a whole new adventure: the honeymoon.

However, the sheer choice of destinations can be somewhat overwhelming, whether you're looking to unwind on a tropical island, hit the slopes or cosy up in the countryside.

We take a look at the best honeymoon destinations for newlyweds who are after a once-in-a-lifetime trip, from sun-soaked beaches to glamorous city breaks...

1. The Maldives

It's no surprise that The Maldives continue to be a firm favourite for a romantic break.

Its islands boast pristine white sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters and lush greenery, not to mention there are countless glamorous all-inclusive resorts offering packages tailored for honeymooners.

After all, they're filled with countless paradise-worthy beaches, picturesque coral reefs and natural reserves - not to mention Curieuse Island is renowned for being home to rare giant tortoises.

If you're on a tight budget or can't take much more annual leave, then a European city break can be a brilliant alternative to long-haul - and what better place than the City of Love?
