Where to go in April

By Sara d'Souza Slide 1 of 10

From global pillow fights to a Japanese flower festival - travel destinations for April

Formerly known as Kanbutsue, Hana-Matsuri (which means flower festival) is a memorial service that’s held at temples throughout Japan to celebrate the birth of Buddha on April 8 (this year it would have been his 2, 555th). The ritual of making ama-cha, a special tea made with hydrangea leaves began in the Edo period and is still a tradition today. To celebrate the day, tiny buildings made with flowers are created at the temples and small figurines of the baby Buddha are put inside them. Colourful parades will be held in Tokyo on April 5 to celebrate.
