NSW juvenile justice system in chaos: union

July 22, 2019. Public Service Association general secretary Stewart Little and assistant general secretary Troy Wright speaking to media in Sydney about a riot at a juvenile detention centre on the NSW central coast. Little says the events at the centre show the system has descended into chaos. He says over 30 detainees have seized control of the centre then attempted to attack or kill sex offenders in the Kariong centre. Wright says the system needs reform and increased funding. "We were extremely disappointed in the state budget, only a few weeks ago, that not one additional dollar has been put towards the juvenile justice system - which is irrefutably now in crisis," Wright says. Little also says there needs to be a judicial inquiry as staff at the facilities are left with little help to control dangerous detainees. "The psychological injuries up there are horrific and yet the government continues to fail to act. What will it take for them to act? What will it take for minister Ward, or indeed for the premier, to come out and bring this situation under control?" he says. (AAP Video/Andrew Leeson)
