'That's a shameful part of our history': 'Patriarchal power' led to NSW criminalising abortion, reverend tells inquiry

Uniting Church minister Dr Margaret Mayman speaks to NSW Parliament's upper house committee in Sydney which is examining draft legislation to decriminalise abortion in the state. The private member's bill, which passed the lower house last week, allows terminations up to 22 weeks as well as for later abortions if two doctors considering all the circumstances agree the termination should occur. Rev Dr Mayman says NSW's abortion laws were instituted during a time when it was deemed appropriate for women's bodies and sexuality to be controlled by "patriarchal power". "That's a shameful part of our history," she tells the hearing. (AAP VIDEO/Callum Godde).
