The 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta presented during Artcurial's Retromobile auctions on Friday achieved an eye-watering $18.977 million – sold to an as-yet unidentified American collector.

The sale came with transparent history. Delivered new to the first custodian in Italy back in 1939, the Alfa was transported onto British soil a year later, since then it has ben owned by just four collectors. The last owner paid only $11,500 for the pre-war beauty.

More great auction cars!

In 1976, the father of the current owner acquired the vehicle to satisfy his lust for sports cars of a bygone era. His son was present on the day he bought it, 42 years ago, and has remained in the family ever since.

Just five examples of the Berlinetta were built by the Italian coachbuilder Touring, responsible for the most flamboyant variants on any of Alfa’s designs. As such, asking prices remain eye-watering.

Along with the Bugatti Atlantic, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta epitomises all that was magnificent about pre-war design. Not only can the Berlinetta lay claim to being one of the 20th Century’s finest creations, but the vehicle can also boast a prestigious line-up of concours awards. In fact, the 1939 Alfa can trumpet perhaps the most celebrated classic car award ever; victor at the Concours d’Élégance at Pebble Beach in the United States.

This isn't the most expensive 1939 Alfa Romeo C 2900B Lungo Spider by Touring sold. An insane $19,800,000 was paid back in 2016.
