Maserati, a century in pictures

As Maserati forges ahead with plans to hit 50,000 sales a year with the help of its new Ghibli and forthcoming Levante SUV, it seems incredible that this enigmatic marque has come close to extinction on more than one occasion.Formed on 1 December 1914 by the Maserati brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Ernesto and Ettore, the company wouldn’t build its first car until 1926, and the first road car wouldn’t arrive until 1946. Within that time (in 1937) the brothers had sold the company on.Eventually the marque would pass to French automaker Citroen, which bought a 60% stake in 1967, upping this to 100% in 1971. But spiralling costs meant Maserati was bankrupt by 1975 – Alejandro De Tomaso then bought into it and later sold his stake to Fiat, which has vowed to sell 50,000 cars by next year. That’s a big number considering just a handful of cars have emerged each year from the factory gates for most of the past century.We take a look at them in this gallery...Tipo 26 (1926–1929) The first racer to come from Maserati, the Tipo 26 was so-called because it was launched in 1926. Built for endurance races such as the Targa Florio as well as Grands Prix, it featured two seats and a 115bhp 1492cc supercharged straight-eight. The Tipo 26B of 1928 upped this to 1980cc and 130bhp.
