1. Go topless

Nothing screams summer road trip more than a convertible, especially a vintage ragtop, so why not rent one for the full cinematic road trip experience? And don't be a knob like 90 per cent of convertible owners and keep the roof up even during absolutely perfect top-down driving conditions. Hey, as Thelma and Louise likely quipped as they drove that gorgeous '66 T-Bird ragtop into the abyss of the Grand Canyon: "You only die once."
