Have a love of the open road but not six figures to spend on a sporty car? Try these on for size

The term "driver's car" gets bandied about a lot in automotive media. Simply put, driver's cars are all about enjoying the on-road experience on a visceral level: you actually want to go to the grocery store and look forward to picking up your kid from school — heck, you'll make up errands just to get more seat time. Driver's cars are big on performance, whether it's from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or the rush of V8 power. A few of the cars on this list have a starting price low enough that heavy-footed drivers can add a bevy of factory options or aftermarket modifications. Other candidates lack that wiggle room, but you don’t need to have deep pockets to have fun: all but two start at less than $40,000.
