Volkswagen Up! Lite Concept

Volkswagen's latest preview of its future city traveller, the Up! Lite Concept, takes two equally frugal technologies, and merges them into one efficient package. It uses a combination of a tiddly 800cc two-cylinder 'clean diesel' engine, matched with an electric motor that acts as starter, alternator and drive unit in one. Together, they produce 64 horsepower and 88 lb.-ft. of torque, which routes through a seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox. The advanced hybrid system allows the Up! Lite to recharge its battery with regenerative braking, and travel on battery power alone. While not a rocket, the Vee-Dub can hit 100 km/h in 12 seconds, and is capable of delivering up to 2.44 L/100 km on the highway.Related Autos links:2009 LA Auto Show: Best in Show2009 LA Auto Show: Wild tuner rides2009 LA Auto Show: Challenge - Youthmobiles of 20302009 LA Auto Show: Cars you can buy (premieres)2009 LA Auto Show: Green Machines2009 LA Auto Show: Super-fast Supercars2009 LA Auto Show: 2010 Green Car of the Year
