Official portion of the race is limited to cars of the type that competed between 1927 and 1957

The 2014 Mille Miglia is here, and the collection of cars and celebrities taking part in this Italian road race is as spectacular as ever. Although now in its 87th year, the event has run 59 times since starting in 1927. (Having stopped during the second world war it was held again in the years between 1947 and 1957, and then the modern revival series started up in 1977.)The competitive element of the “1,000 miles” is strictly limited to cars of the type that competed between 1927 and 1957 – the original era of the race. Although this year there is a special class for period cars that did not compete. It’s also a little more controlled these days, so don’t expect to hear of anything quite so extraordinary as Stirling Moss’ 157.5 km/h average on the 1955 rally. Accompanied by David Jenks, Moss famously drove a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR to victory in just 10 hours, then carried on to Munich overnight – fuelled by 'magic pills' provided by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio. We digress.
