2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Drops its Top Before Frankfurt

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible debuts in Frankfurt later this month as the sixth global entry to the S-Class family. In AMG form, the cabriolet is estimated to hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, or just as quickly as the coupe model.

Like its fixed-roof sibling, the model uses plenty of aluminum. But the cabriolet also includes an aluminum rear floor to save extra weight. On the surface, a black diamond radiator grille, chrome accents, and full LED lights give the flagship's front end a decidedly elegant look. Buyers can even choose turn signals and daytime-running lights emblazoned with Swarovski crystals.

Other than the expensive jewelry, the actual soft top also provides plenty of pizzazz. Available in black, dark blue, beige, and dark red, the top folds completely into the luggage compartment when closed. It takes under 20 seconds to open or close the apparatus, which can be operated at speeds of up to 37 mph. And thanks to a new automatic climate control system, drivers don't have to worry about changing temperature controls when switching between closed-top and open-top driving.

The new S-Class convertible includes all the best features from the brand's bag of tricks. An Airmatic suspension, Nappa leather upholstery, Airscarf neck-heating system, active park assist, Burmester surround sound system, and COMAND infotainment are just some of the standard amenities. Specific to the convertible S-Class is a "Pacific Mood" fragrance to keep the interior smelling uniquely fresh. Options include a head-up display, massaging seats, heated front armrests, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and an advanced driver assistance package.

Under the hood, the standard S550 convertible comes with a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine producing 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes with a nine-speed automatic, and according to Mercedes, can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. To up the ante, Mercedes is also offering an AMG S63 4Matic convertible with an AMG seven-speed. That model brings a 5.5-liter V-8 packing 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, and can achieve the 0-60 run in an estimated 3.9 seconds.

Both the S550 and S63 4Matic convertibles go on sale in spring 2016. The Cabriolet joins the S-Class Coupe, S-Class Sedan, Maybach S600, and S63 and S65 AMG models in the growing global S-Class family. Pricing for the new model will be announced closer to the launch date.
