Been mooning over a Porsche Macan? Excited by a BMW X5? Gawking at a Mercedes-Benz GLC or GLE? All major players on the import SUV field, but if you can hang on until next spring you might want to consider the new 2017 Jaguar F-Pace.

Click on for a half dozen reasons to hold your horses.

1. Can SUV styling be seductive?

If you are attracted to the shapes penned for the likes of Jaguar’s F-Type sports car and XF sedan, you’ll find them nicely altered and upsized to the F-Pace SUV. It looks like a proper modern Jaguar.

We got a preview two years ago at the Frankfurt Show with Jaguar’s C-X17 concept. While the reality of fitting the shape around production components altered the lines slightly, it has that same unmistakable Jag look. The modern grille. Sweptback roof over a greenhouse that narrows at the back. Unmistakable taillight shape tie-in to the F-Type and redone XF. Coefficient of drag? 0.34.

2. Size and space.

Put a tape measure to the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace, and length, height and width are 186.3 inches, 65.6 inches and 86.6 inches (with mirrors). Wheelbase is 113.1. Not surprisingly, those are close to the Porsche Macan, though it rides almost two inches lower. Then again, the Jaguar’s long wheelbase gives it impressively short front and rear overhangs.

Inside, Jaguar claims 23 cubic feet of luggage space. The 40/20/40 second seats fold flat if need be for more space. Up front is a design that can have an analog or configurable digital instrument panel. The 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment center brings Jaguar up to date with all the expected, contemporary apps and extras. It seems four six-footers could ride some distance in comfort.

3. Blame it on RC5754.

That’s the aluminum alloy that makes up roughly 80 percent of the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace as it does in the XE and XF sedans. This trio shares the latest Jaguar architecture, which in the SUV is held together by 2600 self-piercing rivets, 560 spot welds and 238 feet of adhesive.

This structure rides on suspensions also shared with the sedans, a double wishbone design at the front, with an “Integral Link” design in back based on aluminum control arms. Base are 18-inch wheels, but options run to 22 inches. Steering is electromechanical variable-ratio rack and pinion.

4. Easily outruns an E-Type.

Who hasn’t yearned for a Jaguar E-Type? Yet with two of the engine offerings for the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace, it will leave an E-Type in the dust. Such heresy, but the pair are supercharged 3.0-liter V-6s, one at 340 hp, the other at 380 hp and both claiming 332 lb-ft of torque. Late to the gate will be a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder rated at 180 hp and 318 lb-ft. All three engines are matched to an 8-speed ZF automatic.

Those 0-60 times? Depending on engine, E-Types are credited with 6.3-7.1 seconds to 60 mph. The 380-hp F-Pace can do it in 5.1 seconds, about the same as a Macan. The 340-hp V-6 is at 5.4 seconds and the diesel at 8.2. No EPA mileage numbers are available yet.

All this rotates through a Jaguar-developed all-wheel-drive system. Normally the F-Pace scoots along in rear wheel drive, but let traction taper off and the center diff can quickly reroute power where needed, as much as 90 percent front/10 percent rear.

5. Mike Cross, Eastnor Castle, and treacle pudding.

Anyone who has ridden with Cross--Jaguar’s Chief Engineer of Vehicle Integrity--as he dances a car on the edge of control, knows the man can tune a vehicle to handle on any road surface. It’s important for Jag to make this point about the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace’s on-paved-road abilities because it needs to separate it from the other brother, Land Rover, and its long-running off-road character. We're meant to forget Evoque and Discovery Sport, and think Macan instead.

And Eastnor Castle? That has long been Land Rover’s testing ground in England, so the F-Pace was also put through its paces on the steep hills and slimy trails at Eastnor to calibrate its off-road capabilities. As good as a Land Rover?

Treacle pudding? It is sensational at Eastnor Castle and about as English as you can get, like a Barbour coat. No doubt Jaguar is hoping for some German vehicle fatigue to get consumers to try their British alternative.

6. Acronym-city of features: EPAS, SCR, EGR, AWD, IDD, DSC, AdSR, ASPC, AEB, LDW, LKA, TSR, ISL, HUD, ACC and, of course, SSD.

We’d need pages to explain how all these systems work. They do everything from aiding handling to storing your music to lowering pollution to acting like a low-speed cruise control when you’re hub-deep in mud. The point being that all the expected, current electronic features being introduced on our inevitable path to the autonomous car are available on the F-Pace.

Oh, here’s a bonus reason for waiting for the F-Pace, particularly of you are the outdoorsy type: Activity Key. Going swimming? No place to hide the car key? Strap the waterproof Activity Key to your wrist, lock the key fob, phone and wallet in the glovebox. Hold the Key next to the Jaguar name in back and it locks the vehicle and disables the fob. On return, hold the Key next to the Jaguar again and, shazam, your F-Pace is open. Price? 400.

Prices will start at $40,990 for the diesel F-Pace, the 340-hp V-6 opening at $42,390 and 380 F-Pace S with 380 hp at $56,700 (all including $995 delivery).
