Aston Martin Reveals Vantage GTE Art Car for Le Mans

Aston Martin revealed its newest art car, which will take to the grid at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Aston previously fielded an art car car during the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a special Gulf livery on the #97 Vantage GTE.

Now, the #97 Aston Martin Vantage GTE has gone under the spray gun once again, with this year’s scheme designed by renowned visual artist Tobias Rehberger. If the design is hard on your eyes, then Rehberger's goal has been accomplished. The livery features a visual distortion, with sharply contrasting colors and a geometric pattern that creates an “optical effect.”

“My design for the Aston Martin art car is rooted in my interest in distorted perception and related phenomena like auto moving patterns, optical effects, camouflage and visual confusion, which I have addressed in many works before,” Rehberger said in a statement. “In this case, the design is based on a geometric optical effect pattern. Comparable to a fast object, a steady fixation on a point of the pattern is impossible.”

Not that spectators will get an extended look at the Vantage GTE, as the race car is powered by a 4.5-liter V-8 shoving out around 600 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, and will be moving at an immense speed over the course of the race.

Spot the eye-watering Aston Martin Vantage GTE in the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend.
