Audi Q1 Crossover Spotted for the First Time

Our spy photographers caught the Audi Q1 small crossover out testing for the first time as a full-body prototype. The model is expected to debut next year.

Unless the camouflage is hiding a few secrets, the baby Audi sports a completely different grille than the larger Q3 crossover. Its tall, flat nose makes up a large portion of the crossover's overall body. Thanks to its heavily slanted roofline and low ground clearance, the Q1 adopts an athletic, coupe-like appearance.

Audi first confirmed back in 2013 that it would bring out a new entry-level crossover called the Q1. The model will ride on the flexible MQB architecture instead of the older Polo platform from the A1 subcompact. A performance-oriented SQ1 crossover will likely arrive later on.

Now that the subcompact crossover segment has taken off, the Q1 should boost Audi's bottom line. It will most directly compete with the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, but might even cut into sales of Audi's own Q3. Sadly, we don't expect the Q1 to make its way to the U.S. Audi of America President Scott Keogh said earlier this year that the mini crossover might not be able to offer the right mix of price and value for customers here in the States.

Now that you've seen it, do you think the Q1 should come stateside? Tell us in the comments below.
