Demolition derby: A favourite crash time

There’s nothing cooler than watching a bunch of cars, trucks, minivans, combine harvesters … and just about anything else with wheels crash itself out of existence, right?

The demolition derby is like nothing else on the face of the planet. Why? It cuts to the quick of car culture's dark side, drawing on the same grim, universal instincts that transform minor highway collisions into long snarls of rubbernecking traffic. We like to watch and always have, ever since the first organized demo derbies in the 1940s and '50s. But along with the enduring appeal of witnessing fully sanctioned car wrecks, derbies have become steadily stranger, with more classes of clashing vehicles and oddball events ranging from rollover contests to in-car soccer matches. Let's take a look. You know you want to.
