1. Recovering from understeer

This is when the front tires break grip and the car "pushes" forward. "First, get off the gas and consider downshifting, especially on slippery terrain," O'Neil says. "The idea here is to transfer weight forward, helping the front tires dig in and regain traction." Also, stop sawing at that steering wheel; the tires aren't going to hook back up if they're sideways. In fact, you're probably making the situation worse.
