It’s nice when you know that the guy who builds your speed parts is as much of a car guy as you, maybe even more. In the case of Vic Edelbrock Jr., that is most certainly the case. Taking over his father’s company that started in the ‘40s and turning it into one of the biggest and most respected companies in the automotive aftermarket, Vic proved that he’s not only a smart businessman but also a rabid hot rodder with an incredible collection of hot rods, restorations, and race cars. To Mustang fans specifically, he has owned several G.T.350s and the Bud Moore Trans Am Mustang raced by George Fullmer.

But Vic also loves car shows, and 10 years ago he decided to open up his hot rod storage area, Vic’s Garage, to the public and hold a big car show, which was a modest success. Now, a decade later, it’s a big deal, so we went down to Torrance, California on Saturday May 2 to check it out from a decidedly Mustang and Ford perspective.

The show was open to all street rods, muscle cars, classic cars, trucks, specialty vehicles, motorcycles and more, and they were all there. We even saw a BMW M1, the first one we’ve ever witnessed “in the wild.” Entrants got an event T-shirt, hat, lanyard, and a $50 gift certificate, as well as complimentary coffee and donuts, and spectators (there was no charge to get in) were welcome to a Kid’s Corner, a few movie-themed cars, a handful of food trucks, several vendor displays, and even a beer and wine garden.

We’ve known Vic for many years, and can tell you for certain that he’s a seriously patriotic guy concerned with maintaining domestic manufacturing and the future of automotive performance by getting young people involved. This latter obsession is one of the reasons that the car show also hosted the 7th annual Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge Regional competition, where local high school students competed in a high-energy engine building competition. The top teams from each region earn their spot to compete at the National Finals in Las Vegas at the "Showdown at SEMA" in early November and are honored with scholarships from Ohio Technical College, University of Northwestern Ohio, and the School of Automotive Machinists.

Fords were well-represented at this year’s Edelbrock Car Show, again the 10th annual. The company plans on continuing the show, so make plans next year to come check it out. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday in Southern California.
