Is the Frankfurt Flyer actually a Porsche and where did the car come from?

Runge’s Frankfurt Flyer isn’t a Porsche, however. It’s a labour of love constructed by the 33-year-old Minnesota resident. The Frankfurt Flyer originally came about in 1949 when Frankfurt VW dealer Walter Glocker developed a mid-engined racing car using VW Beetle running gear. When the car caught the eye of the then Porsche boss Ferry Porsche, the two struck a deal to use Porsche power, racing it under the Porsche badge and improving the Flyer’s potential. The Glock VW "Eigenbau" special eventually morphed into the Porsche 550 Spyder.
