The decade started out fine, but turned dark and desolate very quickly

The 1970s was a tough decade for cars. It started out like gangbusters with the introduction of the Dodge Challenger and Datsun 240Z -- both solid performers. Then the oil crisis hit in 1973, and the automotive landscape turned bleak mighty fast. Fuel economy became more important than performance nearly overnight, leading to smaller vehicles that were shells of their former selves, such as the Ford Mustang II, or were barebones econoboxes, such as the AMC Pacer.
