Juan Manuel Fangio

I will go on record as seeing Juan Manuel Fangio as the greatest driver of all time. Yes, he won "only" five Formula One championships (compared with Michael's seven) but what tips the balance in the Argentine's favour in my estimation is that he won an amazing 23 F1 races out of just 51 starts in a day when competition - his rivals included Stirling Moss, Alberto Ascari and Mike Hawthorn - was both fierce and extremely dangerous. Perhaps the most amazing thing about Fangio is that we'll never know how great a Formula One driver he really was. He started his F1 career at the tender age of 37 and only raced eight complete seasons in the upper echelon of motor racing before retiring.Bing: More on Juan Manuel Fangio
