Small cars, EVs dominate the 2014 list

When car shopping, many consumers consider only a vehicle's purchase price to determine affordability, rather than including what a car will cost over time in terms of fuel and repair bills. Auto research firm Vincentric calculates maintenance costs over five years of ownership based on service schedules; parts and labor costs for repairs; as well as high-wear items not typically covered under warranty, such as shocks and tires. Five-year projections for repairs are based on the cost of a zero-deductible extended warranty covering all repairs outside the manufacturer's warranty. Consumer Reports' ratings eliminate models with worse-than-average reliability, although some data is unavailable. Let's look at some of the cheapest cars to maintain from model year 2014, in descending order.
