Ever since it hit theaters in February, Black Panther has been breaking barriers left and right. In addition to its rich world-building, epic costumes, and mostly non-white cast, it made a killing at the box office and had the biggest February opening of all time. Now, Black Panther is making history with its nominations for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. The nominations for this year’s Golden Globes were released today, December 6th, and Black Panther was among the five movies nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama. As HuffPost pointed out, this makes the film the first superhero movie to appear in the category ever.

Deadpool received a Best Motion Picture nomination in 2016, but that was in the Musical or Comedy category. In addition to Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, A Star Is Born, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Bohemian Rhapsody will also compete for the most coveted prize at the Globes. The Ryan Coogler-directed movie was also nominated in two other categories. “All of the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar featuring SZA was nominated for Best Original Song, and Ludwig Göransson’s work on the film earned a nod for Best Original Score.

Superhero movies have historically had trouble breaking into awards shows. The Washington Post points out that, while Marvel movies have been previously nominated for Academy Awards for special effects, none have won. The most significant win for the genre came in 2009, when Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. But with Black Panther‘s historic Golden Globes nominations, it’s possible that the movie could also receive a few nods at this year’s Academy Awards.

We definitely think Black Panther is worthy of this honor. Congratulations to the cast and crew on this huge news.
