BBC America/YouTube BBC America/YouTube While there won't be a "Doctor Who" Christmas special this year, fans are eagerly anticipating a New Year's Day special, and Sunday brought our first look.

Capping off new Doctor Jodie Whittaker's first season, the trailer opens with the Doctor and her companions inside the TARDIS, and she exclaims in numb terror, “This is the DNA of the most dangerous creature in the universe!”

"It's been buried on Earth since the ninth century," she continues, as scenes of ancient warfare give way to modern-day soldiers embroiled in combat.

"It's not going to stop until it's taken control of this planet," she warns. "It's going to kill anyone that gets in its path."

The creature's name: Resolution, described as "a terrifying evil" that "is stirring from across the centuries of Earth’s history," and viewers will presumably get to see this fearsome creature face to face on Jan. 1.

Meanwhile, BBC America confirmed that Whittaker will be returning to "Doctor Who" for her second season, which is set to air in early 2020.
